Machining

Fabrication shops will usually have limited machining capabilities including but not limited to; metal lathes, mills, mag drills and other portable metal working tools.

Welding
Welding is generally the main focus of steel fabrication. Once the parts are formed and machined they will be assembled and tack welded into place then inspected for accuracy.

Once the part has been inspected for accuracy the welder will complete welding. If engineering drawings are available the welder will weld to the specification given. If no drawings are supplied the welder will use his own judgment and experience to complete the part.

Certain precautions may be needed to prevent warping of the weldment due to heat. These precautions may include; welding in a staggered fashion, covering the weldment in sand during cooling, using a stout fixture and straightening operations.

If a weldment should warp it would be straightened using a Oxy-acetylene torch. Using the torch heat is applied to the steel in a slow, linear sweep. The steel will contract, upon cooling, in the direction of the sweep.
